Obituary for Elizabeth M. "Betty" Knapp (Homer)

Elizabeth M. "Betty" Knapp (Homer)
Elizabeth “Betty” (Homer) Knapp passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Laurel Ridge Center. She was born on June 8, 1929 in Edenborn, Pa, daughter of John and Anna (Kennick) Homer. Her parents and brothers, John Homer, George Homer and Paul Homer, and an infant brother, Peter, preceded her in death.

From Edenborn, Betty’s family moved to Juniata, Pa. where she attended Juniata Grade School. After graduating from Dunbar Twp High School in 1947, she worked for Parshall & Crow Law Offices and Pioneer Electric of Uniontown. She married a hometown boy, John Knapp, in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Connellsville in 1956. Betty and John made their home in Uniontown and became members of St. Mary (Nativity) Church. Betty was a Past President and Secretary of St. Mary’s Confraternity of Christian Mothers, and a lector for many years. She also worked in the school cafeteria.

Betty was a good sports fan. She loved the Steelers, Pens, and Pirates. When two of her children attended Virginia Tech, the Hokies became her favorite college football team. Starting in 1978, she and John drove to Blacksburg annually for a football game until 2002, when traveling became difficult.

Her favorite singer and song were Perry Como and his “And I Love You So.”

Betty and John had a wonderful life together for over 61 years. In addition to being the beloved wife of John, she was the mother of three children, Paula Kupstas (David), of Richmond, VA; Edward Knapp of Uniontown; and John Knapp of Stafford, VA; and three grandchildren, Abby Kupstas, Jack Knapp, and Joey Knapp. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Evelyn Homer and Margaret Williams, and many nieces and nephews.

Betty fondly kept in touch with family members, including Kay Lukey, Betty Lorraine Rumiseck, Cherie Black and Becky Crilley. She delighted in her lifelong friendship with Betty Hudak. Living on Oakland Avenue next to St. Anthony Friary, she enjoyed having as neighbors the priests there: Father Joe, Father Richard, Father Marion, Father Matthew, and many others. She loved Oakland Avenue and the many wonderful friends and neighbors there. She enjoyed living in Bitner in her later years.

A favorite place to eat was Sam’s Coffee Shop downtown and, years ago, at the Original Pappy’s on Route 40.

Betty’s family would like to thank the Laurel Ridge staff, including doctors, nurses, and all of the aides who so lovingly cared for her. A special thanks to Jamie, who provided valuable advice and was always there, especially in times of greatest need. Thanks also to Amedisys Hospice for their loving care of Betty.

Friends will be received in the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, Inc., 603 N. Gallatin Ave., Ext., Uniontown, PA on Friday, November 24th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. ; and Saturday, November 25th until 9:30 a.m. when Prayers of Transfer will be said.
